Goodbye Astoria We Love You

I was lucky enough to get the Annie Liebovitz show on Thursday, at the National Portrait Gallery. It was very busy but that seemed to add to it, rather than being frustrating. It was a very 'full' show, encompassing all aspects of her work.

I was particularly interested in the family photos and photos of her lover Susan Sontag, which documented their life together, Sontag's illness and eventual death in 2004. Strong and emotional stuff. Liebovitz had her first child at the age of 51 (and I was thought I was old having Sam at 36!) and her photos of her little girl and subsequent twins, born to a surrogate mother in 2005, were beautiful and compelling.

The best bit of the show was at the end, where in a contructed side room were hundreds of photos and contact sheets, pinned up under glass, in an informal and intimate way. All life, its ups and downs, happy and sad times, blissful and tragic moments was reflected here. I particularly liked the photo of Patti Smith with her two children and the photos taken in Sarajevo.

I also went to Anthony's show (of Anthony and the Johnsons) at the delightful Isis gallery. A very small but pleasant space in Hanway Street. I was sorry to have missed David Tibet's show there but funnily enough he was there with his partner Andria Degens who is Pantaleimon, whose music I have written about on here before. I was too shy to say hello. I didn't want to be the 'gushing fan' but I do love the music they make.

I then went to look for the October Gallery to see the Bryon Gysin show but somehow I kept missing the street it is in and walked all round Bloomsbury for hours, coming across places I have never seen before but in the end feeling very tired and pissed off that I didn't get there. Never mind, there may still be time...

I shouldn't really have been out at all as I still have a chest infection but desperately needed to get out and do something before going back to uni. I walked past the Astoria, which has now closed and will be demolished soon. They have promised that another venue will eventually be built to replace it, but of course it will never be the same.

I really have lost count of the bands I have seen there but a few would be: Revolting Cocks, Nine Inch Nails, Loop, The Happy Mondays (an early gig where they were suppporting and got bottled off), On U Sound System, The Cramps... and loads of others that are lost in the mists of time.

London seems to be going through some big changes at the moment. I am sure the credit crunch and approaching recession will see it change in many more ways which cannot yet be predicted. The city is always changing but it does seem to have some sort of momentum and different energy about it at the moment. Like a purge...I don't know. I may write more about this... But it is still the most unfathomable, beautiful, and inspiring place.

So much for the holidays

Well, I've learned a lot over the past few months. I've also left a lot of things behind in the past, which was very weird in the end. I'd been wrestling with how to let them go and it felt really hard and intangible. And then, on Saturday 3rd January, I woke up and felt truly peaceful for the first time in years.
I woke up on my own, without the sound of Sam calling "Mummeeee", or an alarm. I just woke up. And it was quiet. And I was quiet. And I just lay there luxuriating and immersing myself in this quietness, internal and external.
Ahh, Lovely!
The assignments are done and been handed in and I have sumitted a couple of things for inclusion in a couple of things, so we'll see what happens.
And now I am looking forward and living in this new-ish year...I've not had much of a chance to blog but am going to get back into it from now on.
I will be interested to see how this blog develops over the year.
Uni is great but intense and hard work combined with looking after Sam.
Sam has had a tough week or so with a rotten cough, chicken pox and now a tummy bug. Poor boy. I am looking forward to him getting well so he can get out and have some fun again, although he is really loving finger painting!
I have had to rearrange and cancel appointments, social engagements and projects to take care of my boy, which has been frustrating after looking forward to a few days off. Funnily enough though it has been great to stop everything and just be with him completely. So a blessing really. Just hope he is better soon.
Now, I have a piece of flash fiction to write for a competition, and some flapjacks in the oven which need checking. So I'm outta here...but not for long.
Love and Peace to all xxx

GOOD TV!

Oh, thank goodness, I'm back! I just watched All the Young Dudes on BBC4. A programme presented and written by Paul Morley about his experience of fashion and music, those perfect partners. If you are able to see it on the BBC website 'watch-it-again-new-fangled-a-bob' I recommend it. Especially if you remember Paul Morley as a writer for the NME, the ultimate cool commentator on music of the 80s- I thought him a bit too 'cool-for-school' sometimes but I am very fond of the ole bugger really... this is a TV gem, and I don't find many of them these days... Oh yeah, and Phil Oakey from The Human League saying he thought he looked very average..!?

Here Comes the Sun

Inward and under
rent asunder
Light is returning
Bringing the morning
New hope, new dreams
Which path to take
Decisions to make
The dark protected us
Mulched us and gave us
Cover and sustenance
Ready for rebirth
Here comes the sun

Happy Solstice!

When the Snowman Brings the snow

I have a million and two things to do- assignments to work on-eek! and it's all snowballing - yes, yes at this time of year as well...sorry it's inexcusable ;-)
So I haven't had time to blog much BUT
I just had to write
Because
This morning
I played Sam Frosty the Snowman by
THE Cocteau Twins
and he Loved it!
And then I found I wish It could be Christmas Every Day by Wizzard
on YouTube
And
He Loved that as well!
And then something else happened...
I had engaged with Christmas and let it in to my heart
And that is something I haven't done since my Mum died
In face I have hated Christmas since my mum died-seeing it as something to endure
Because how could Christmas be Christmas without my Mum?
But here it is again and now I have my boy to introduce all these wonderful, silly, happy songs, traditions and rituals to.
He met Father Christmas the other day too.
And I shed quite a few tears and decided that I would rather shed a few tears and admit that Christmas is still a time to Bring Good Cheer
Especially to Sam
Because I am his mum
Than try and pretend I was alright but I didn't care about it anymore
Because I do care
And I love Christmas /Yule
I am soooooo soppy
:-)
