Charlie Parker

I didn't listen to any jazz yesterday so I am making up for it today- but actually is Charlie Parker jazz or bebop or both? I am hopelessly ignorant about all this. But I am on a mission to find out now. I would heartily recommend 'The Essential Charlie Parker' to anyone and everyone. It has kept me company all day and I have been having a great time, despite trying to get my head round critical analysis of 2 pieces of writing for my next creative writing seminar next Friday...not done anything like it for a while so it's been good to dust off my academic head and stick it on, in a slightly Worzel Gummidge kinda fashion. And now I'd better get back to it.

  1. Parker is both Jazz and Be bop, it depends on the era. You should look out for a box set called 'Boss Bird' which is normally very cheap but has four of his classic albums and some extras.

Miles Davis' last album 'Doo Bop' mixed Be Bop with Hip Hop, it is well worth a listen.

  2. I have noticed you. I am also a lover of jazz and most of the artists mentioned here including those by one of your reader's (John) rank amongst my favourites. I was drawn to Jazz after listening to mademoiselle mabry, nefertiti, bitches brew and the likes by Miles. That was what did it for me and I hope we do stay connected. In fact, Ill include a link to your blog after editing my next post.

  4. Thanks John- I will check that Miles Davis album- sounds intriguing! And Thank you r.e.ii. Very much appreciated. I am going to write a lot more about jazz over the coming weeks. I've just finally heard some Sun Ra this weekend too. A whole new horizon has opened up. I am going to explore and report back here... :-)
